MEN’S LUXURY WATCH TRENDS: WHAT’S IN, WHAT’S OUT?

by | May 16, 2021 | Style, Watches

Trends, like all cycles, ebb and flow. In the men’s luxury watch industry, only time can tell what is and is no longer in demand. And like time, trends are cyclical as old favorites are replaced with new, only to be replaced by old again.

We’re in the second year of COVID-19 and time seems to be at a stand-still. We’ve been surprised by the new launches, like IWC Schaffhausen, on watch blogs. Look at what horology aficionados are currently coveting. Maximalism and minimalism are neither in competition nor coexistence, but rather synchronically proliferate our timelines (and wish lists).

Canada’s best luxury website: Buzz-worthy timepieces

Hardware is back but unlike the heavy, clunky genre of the 90s. And the most coveted color switches from blue to green, still an earth-tone but not necessarily neutral. As summer approaches and sleeve lines shorten, we’re excited to see wrists adorned with the latest buzz-worthy timepieces.

Green is the new blue

Blue has been the go-to colour for men’s luxury watch bezels, faces, and straps for almost a decade. From navy to cobalt, watches warmed up to blue’s cool, downplayed aesthetic. Not a neutral but neither a vivid colour, blue was a low-risk choice for high-risk tastes. Now, expect to see its departure traded for green, an equally extending color in its tone.

Omega Seamaster 300 Malachite

From gem-like emeralds to army greens to bright hues, green encompasses a range of emotions: commandeering, grounding, exciting. Omega’s Seamaster 300 Malachite is made from a fashionable South African malachite that is unabashedly eye-catching. For those who prefer monotone styles, Hublot’s Classic Fusion Green features an earthy olive green with a matching rubber or rubber-backed alligator strap.

Men’s luxury watches: Steel bracelets

Steel bracelet watch straps have been known to be chunky, audacious, and gauche. Over the past ten years, this metal strap has been streamlined to become the sleek, elegant, and the intentional statement it is today. Simultaneously understated and present, steel bracelets suit many styles. From sporty to luxe, watch brands like Norqain, IWC, and Rolex have mastered the universal cool of a steel watch.

Not to mention, during a time of want versus need, stainless steel watches are versatile, timeliness, and durable. The lifespan of steel watches should be more than a single lifetime, to be carried down. Also, the affordability of stainless steel compared to precious metals means your dollars are wisely invested.

Men’s luxury watches: Celebrating icons

This season, and the seasons to come, focus on perfecting men’s luxury watch icons. Omega’s Speedmaster professional, IWC’s Pilot, and Rolex Explorer have higher standards connoted in their names. To sit at the apex of luxury, they must be driven by perfection.

Instead of focusing on trivialities, watch brands are amplifying what it means to be minimalist by cleaning up design. Men’s luxury watches are moving away from kitschy and ornate details to mastering inconspicuously innovative details.

High watchmaking

Backtracking from this simplified approach, complicated movements are something that will be hard to keep your eye off of. IWC’s Perpetual Calendar Pilot has a face that says it all. With a display for the date, day, month, year, and moon phases in the northern and southern hemisphere, a single glance is enough to know it all.

Vacherin Constantine also forays into beautifully complicated mechanics with their Overseas Perpetual Skeleton. An epic name for an epic watch, this features a solid rose-gold 41.5 mm case, full perpetual calendar displays. The Maltese Cross-style bracelet that can be alternated with both alligator and rubber straps. The demand for high watchmaking has been surprisingly unimpacted by COVID. A large group of aficionados are still seeking over-the-top craftsmanship, prestigious designs and engineering.
