Porsche is often a car-maker that is steeped in tradition with an illustrious sports car line-up, while every new generation of the 911 is all about a delicate evolution.

However, it has looked into the crystal ball and have come up with its vision of the sports car of the future called the Porsche Mission X. It is a blank canvas filled with radical design details while being wrapped around an electric powertrain.

Porsche Mission X: A souped-up electric hypercar

While yet to be decided for production, the Mission X is probably the next big leap forward after the 918 hypercar which came years back. At 4.5 metres (177 inches long) and 2 meters (78.7 inches) wide, the Porsche Mission X concept study is relatively compact and is not too long or too impractical.

With a wheelbase of 2.73 metres (107.4 inches), it has the dimensions of the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder but with greater packaging freedom.

We will wager that the Mission X will be made but expect a long gestation period as with hyper cars, boundaries need to be pushed and time is the only thing sometimes takes a backseat with complicated cars like these.

Le Mans-style doors inspired by the legendary 917

This concept car has staggered tires, with 20-inch wheels at the front and 21-inch wheels at the rear. The design mimics the traditional cab-forward shape with carbon-fibre having a satin finish while being exposed too. It is low-slung like a pure racing car though with a lightweight glass dome with an exoskeleton made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic which would be lovingly gazed by occupants. Plus it has the mandatory Le Mans-style doors inspired by the legendary 917.

Even the headlamps are inspired by Porsche racing cars. So there is a lot of history beneath those futuristic lines. There is also the redesigned Porsche crest which makes its debut in this car.

Porsche Mission X: Evolution of hypercar EVs

The packaging like a mid-engined car with a battery stacked at the back plus while we are yet to get the figures, this promises to be a fast hypercar like any benchmark Porsche. This isn’t a surprise since it has always set the same goals for its previous hypercars like the Porsche 959 (1985), Carrera GT (2003) and 918 Spyder (2013).

The production spec car will be tasked with being the fastest road-legal vehicle around the Nürburgring Nordschleife plus also have a power-to-weight ratio of roughly one hp per kilogram (2.2 lbs).

Porsche Mission X goes up against the Lotus Evija

That is not all though as with a 900-volt system architecture, it will charge roughly twice as quickly as the current Porsche Taycan Turbo S. A rather tall order for any new hypercar to not just be focused on performance but also charging.

Porsche has not revealed the range of course but expect a decent figure in making this also a hypercar that you can comfortably get around in. The interior is beguiling and racing car-like with all the required amenities but interestingly, Porsche have made a special stopwatch module with an analogue and digital display.

We will wager that the Porsche Mission X will be made but expect a long gestation period as with hyper cars, boundaries need to be pushed and time is the only thing that sometimes takes a backseat with complicated cars like these. Porsche will most probably build a limited number of these cars and it will compete with the Lotus Evija as an EV flagship.
