THE BASICS OF SPORTS BETTING

The Super Bowl starts in a short while, and there’s still plenty of time if you are into sports betting to place a wager on the Kansas City Chiefs versus the Philadelphia Eagles. The American Gaming Association this week said that a record 50 million Americans will wager $16 billion on the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. So the numbers are going to be big.

How to bet on sports

Sports betting is the activity of predicting sports results and placing a wager on the outcome. That’s basically it. So If you want to bet on sports, you will need to find a sportsbook or bookmaker to place your bets with. There are many sportsbooks and bookmakers available online and offline, so you will need to shop around to find one that suits your needs.

When you find a sportsbook or bookmaker, you will need to open an account with them and deposit some money. Regulated sportsbooks will make it easy to move money via Interac or PayPal into your accounts. Once you have an account and some money to bet with, you can start placing bets on the sports you are interested in.

To place a bet, choose a sport, event, and market. For example, you might choose to bet on the Super Bowl, the winner of the game, and the number of TDs scored, right down to fun “props” like the number of TDs the Chiefs’ Travis Kelce will score, or the results of the coin toss. Once you have chosen your bet, you will need to decide how much money you want to wager and place your bet.

Betting on the spread

In sports betting, “betting on the spread” means placing a bet on the team that is expected to win, but by a certain number of points. The point spread is a number set by the sportsbook or bookmaker that is designed to balance the bets on both teams. For example, if one team is heavily favored to win, the point spread may be higher, meaning that the favored team needs to win by more points in order for bets on that team to be successful.

The Super Bowl spread currently has Eagles at -1.5 favourites, with the Chiefs at +1.5.

Moneyline

The moneyline is a type of bet that is based on the outright winner of an event, rather than the point spread. When you bet on the moneyline, you are simply betting on which team or player you think will win the event.

The odds for moneyline bets are usually expressed in the form of a positive or negative number. A positive number indicates the amount of profit you will earn if you bet $100 and the team or player wins. A negative number indicates the amount of money you will need to bet in order to win $100.

The moneyline on the Super Bowl is Eagles -120, Chiefs +100.

Over/Under

The “over/under” is a type of bet that is based on the total number of points scored in a game. The sportsbook or bookmaker sets a number, and you can bet on whether the total number of points scored in the game will be over or under that number. For example, if the over/under for a basketball game is set at 180 points, you can bet on whether the total number of points scored by both teams will be over or under 180.

Over/Under on the Super Bowl currently? O/U 51.5.
