2026 BMW iX xDrive60 is a Bold Swing at Redefining Luxury on Batteries

by | Mar 14, 2026 | Motor, Cars

BMW is going all in on electric SUVs, if this year’s Canadian International AutoShow was any indication. An entire level in the South Building of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre was dedicated to BMW, focusing on M Series cars. The highlight of that was the BMW iX3 display SUV, which will go on sale in Canada this fall (you can pre-order now). Two months before the show, I was driving another BMW electric SUV – the 2026 BMW iX xDrive60 (Base MSRP CAD $94,900).

The 2026 BMW iX xDrive60 and the new BMW iX3 are both all-electric SUVs, but they represent very different vehicles in size, platform, technology, positioning and performance.

Comparing the BMW iX xDrive60 and the BMW iX3

The iX xDrive60 is a refreshed version of BMW’s flagship luxury electric SUV (full-size, comparable to an X5 in footprint), while the new iX3 is the first production model on BMW’s all-new “Neue Klass” dedicated EV platform, positioned as a more compact/mid-size electric SUV (similar in concept to the gas-powered X3).

Exterior Design Innovations

I spent a week with the 2026 BMW iX xDrive60. The SUV sets itself apart in the luxury EV segment through a bold, futuristic exterior redesign, emphasizing aerodynamic efficiency and visual drama.

At the forefront is the iconic BMW Kidney Grille, now featuring a striking illuminated frame with vertical daytime running lights that create a commanding presence, day or night. I loved the look if it, compared to past BMW SUVs. This update includes restyled wheels and revised lighting elements, blending progressive aesthetics with functional aerodynamics to achieve a drag coefficient that enhances range without compromising style.

Unlike traditional luxury SUVs that rely on chrome-heavy opulence, the iX xDrive60 adopts a minimalist, monolithic silhouette crafted from sustainable materials like carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, reducing weight while exuding sophistication. This approach not only sets it apart from competitors like the Mercedes EQS SUV but also integrates seamless LED lighting for a high-tech allure.

The available M Sport Package adds sporty accents, such as aerodynamic bumpers and larger alloys. That makes it a standout for those seeking a blend of elegance and athleticism in an all-electric package. Overall, these elements position the iX as a forward-thinking luxury vehicle that prioritizes innovation over convention.

Interior Luxury and Comfort

Out of all the luxury cars I’ve driven over a 10-year period, BMWs have always stood out. A big part of that has come down to interior comfort. Over the years I’ve taken BMW media cars on long drives – an M6 from Toronto to New York City, and an M850i from Vancouver to Los Angeles. That’s where interior comfort become a difference-maker.

The interior of tha 2026 BMW iX xDrive60 redefines luxury with a spacious, minimalist cabin that prioritizes serenity and sustainability, setting it apart from gas-powered rivals.

The interior features leather-free upholstery made from eco-friendly materials, heated multi-function seats with extensive adjustability, and a heated hexagonal steering wheel for ultimate comfort during long drives. Ambient lighting and a four-zone climate control system create a personalized oasis, while the Sky Lounge panoramic glass roof with electrochromic shading allows for adjustable natural light without glare, enhancing the sense of openness. Cargo space is generous, offering up to 77.9 cubic feet, making it practical for luxury lifestyles.

What truly elevates it is the curated simplicity—fewer physical buttons in favor of intuitive haptic feedback—contrasting with the button-cluttered interiors of some competitors. Premium options like the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound system augments the overall experience. This focus on progressive luxury ensures the iX xDrive60 feels like a high-end sanctuary on wheels, blending modern minimalism with tactile opulence for discerning drivers who value both ethics and indulgence.

Cutting-Edge Technology Integration

From a luxury standpoint, the 2026 BMW iX xDrive60 excels with its seamless integration of advanced technology, providing an intuitive and connected experience that outshines many peers.

The centerpiece is the curved BMW Curved Display, combining a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, powered by the latest iDrive OS for effortless navigation and voice control. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot keep occupants connected, while the optional hands-free driving assistance enables semi-autonomous highway cruising. Unique to BMW, the system includes over-the-air updates for continuous improvements, ensuring the vehicle evolves post-purchase.

Safety features like forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control come standard. This was particularly noteworthy, driving through downtown Toronto at a time when bike and scooter couriers have increased immensely.

Unlike some luxury EVs with overwhelming interfaces, the iX’s tech feels refined and user-centric, with haptic feedback and gesture controls adding a layer of sophistication. This harmonious blend of innovation and usability positions the iX xDrive60 as a tech-forward luxury leader, ideal for those who demand cutting-edge convenience without complexity.

Performance and Driving Dynamics

The 2026 BMW iX xDrive60 stands out in luxury vehicles for its exhilarating performance that defies its SUV stature, delivering sports-car-like dynamics in an electric format.

Powered by dual electric motors producing 536 horsepower and 564 lb-ft of torque, it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, providing instantaneous thrust that rivals high-end performance sedans. The adaptive air suspension and integral active four-wheel steering ensure agile handling, making tight corners feel effortless despite the vehicle’s 5,692-pound weight. Silicon carbide inverters enhance efficiency and responsiveness, allowing for a smooth, refined ride that absorbs imperfections while maintaining BMW’s signature driving precision.

Unlike many luxury EVs that prioritize comfort over engagement, the iX xDrive60 balances both. Regenerative braking feels natural and enhances control. The M Sport Package further amplifies this with sport-tuned suspension and brakes, appealing to enthusiasts. This unique fusion of power, poise, and electric silence creates a driving experience that’s both thrilling and serene, setting a new benchmark for luxury electric SUVs in terms of dynamic luxury.

Battery Efficiency and Range Capabilities

A key differentiator for the 2026 BMW iX xDrive60 in the luxury EV market is its impressive battery efficiency and extended range. Range anxiety is less an issue with people who have been drifting to EVs reluctantly. Equipped with a 100.1-kWh battery pack, it offers up to 364 miles of EPA-estimated range on a single charge, an improvement over previous models thanks to refined engineering like more efficient motors and aerodynamics.

Charging is rapid, with DC fast charging replenishing 10-80% in just 35 minutes at 195 kW, and a full home charge taking about 10.75 hours at 11 kW. This outperforms many competitors in real-world efficiency, achieving better energy use through regenerative systems and lightweight construction.

The vehicle’s intelligent energy management, including preconditioning and route-optimized navigation, further maximizes range, making it ideal for luxury buyers who value spontaneity. Unlike some EVs that compromise power for mileage, the iX xDrive60 delivers both, with seamless integration of efficiency tech that feels invisible yet impactful. This positions it as a versatile luxury option for urban commutes or cross-country adventures.

Sustainability and Innovative Luxury Features

What truly makes the 2026 BMW iX xDrive60 unique among luxury vehicles is its deep commitment to sustainability, woven into every aspect without diluting opulence.

Built with recycled materials and carbon-neutral production processes, it features eco-friendly interiors like microfiber suedes and olive-tanned leathers, appealing to environmentally conscious elites. The electrochromic panoramic roof and efficient LED lighting minimize energy use while enhancing ambiance. BMW’s holistic approach includes a modular battery design for easier recycling and over-the-air software updates to extend vehicle lifespan.

In contrast to traditional luxury cars reliant on fossil fuels, the iX xDrive60 offers guilt-free indulgence with zero emissions and silent operation, fostering a tranquil cabin experience. Additional innovations, such as the optional radiant heating panels for targeted warmth, reduce overall energy draw.
