Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder was named NBA MVP last night, beating out the Denver Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic, and did two things – thanked his wife, in a tearful news conference afterwards, then gifted his teammates Rolex watches. The Rolex watches were reportedly priced at $16,999 a pop.
Gilgeous-Alexander, from Hamilton, Ontario, is currently pacing his Thunder in the NBA Western Conference Finals against the Minnesota Timberwolves, up 1-0 in the series. The point guard at 49 30+ point games this past regular season, and 13 40+ games, leading the Thunder to a dominating 68-14 record.
In a viral clip, each of his teammates are shown brandishing their new Rolex watches, with Gilgeous-Alexander enjoying it all in the background.
He said here: âSo the watches⊠I think it was last season. We were just on the bus being silly like we always are, and I canât remember who it was — actually, of course it was J-Will (Jaylin Williams). He was like, âTwo, what are you gonna get us when you win MVP?â And itâs a crazy question to ask, but I donât know what brought it up — watches were in the conversation. A lot of guys on the team like watches. Who doesnât like watches? And then I said yes — which was silly on my part.”
“But as I got closer to achieving the goal, I was like, âWait a second, I actually have to do what I said I was going to do.â So I made it happen.â
Gilgeous-Alexander won the NBAâs scoring title, averaging 32.7 points, 6.4 assists, and five rebounds per game, with a 51.9% field goal percentage.Â
