Finding your forever home isn’t easy, and it’s not something that you’ll want to rush. A long-term home isn’t just one with four walls and roof. It needs to fit your lifestyle and that of your family. And more of us are spending more time at home these days.

So if you want your next home to be the one you and your family settle in for years and decades to come, there are a few things you might want to consider as you start the search.
Look for additional land
One of the things that you might want to look for when choosing a home is a place that comes with extra land. Of course, this kind of property is prime real estate and will cost you more because everyone wants as much land as possible. But the benefit of paying for it is that it gives you the option to extend and add things later on if the home is eventually no longer offering everything you need.
Ensure the location is the right one
Your location needs to be right and it needs to offer everything you want it to if you’re going to ensure your home is the forever home you so desperately want. The location is just as important as the house itself; you’ll eventually want to move out if you find that the location doesn’t offer the facilities and things you need it to.
Why not have it custom designed and built?
If you want to make sure that your home is always going to be right for you and that it offers every little thing you need, one of the options you might want to consider is building a home that’s fully custom and bespoke. If you want to do that, you’ll need to work with a classical architect who can help you meet your needs, as well as a team of experienced builders and landscapers.
Use your budget strategically
You need to make sure that you’re using your budget in a way that’s wise and strategic. Maybe you have certain needs and wants that will raise your budget. But you might also have some issues that you’re willing to accept that might bring the price down. By balancing those things, you can find a deal that suits you and saves you money.
Think long-term
You definitely need to take a long-term approach when weighing up the various options open to you. Without that kind of approach, you’ll ignore how your needs might change in the future and how your home will eventually need to accommodate them. It’s something that you should at least give some thought to as you’re searching for the right home for yourself and your whole family.
There are lots of things to consider when it comes to finding your forever home. Even one little thing that’s out of place or not quite right could grow into something bigger in the future, potentially making you want to move again. So be sure to take your time and get things right.

I am a 50-something Torontonian who loves everything about my city. It’s been my home, my playground, for my entire life. I went to school here. I met my wife here. I own real estate here. I love writing about the transformation of my city on the world stage, which hasn’t been anything short of dramatic. That continues on, as I write this. I write on the real estate scene. I write on travel and fashion. I like following the world of luxury watches.
But I love writing about cars – check that, luxury cars, a level of superior, engineering sophistication, high performance and style, that transports you not just from one destination to another but also out of whatever you are going through on a particular day, whatever mood you are in, all to another head space. It’s complete and total exhilaration, head to toe.
