Hypercars were traditionally known as instruments of sheer speed and dipped in an extreme ethos governed by aerodynamics. However, we still pine for the supercars that graced bedroom walls in the 70s, 80s and 90s with sense of attachment to those iconic shapes.
Hence, no wonder that manufacturers are revisiting their past catalogue to conjure up a retro rebirth of their past work albeit within a modern canvas. Here are the top 3 restomod hypercars which have given birth to a new genre.
Singer DLS-T
If you are talking about restomod hypercars then you must talk about Singer and its outrageous creations. They take the canvas of an old Porsche 911 but reimagine or transform in such a delectable fashion that they take this sports car to hypercar levels. The Singer DLS meanwhile is their most outrageous car yet and the Turbo iteration takes a more aggressive design approach with a monstrous rear wing.
The looks are jaw dropping but the thought of harnessing a 700 bhp twin-turbo flat six via a 6-speed manual is music to enthusiast’s ears. The exposed linkage and the details are also true to Singer’s obsession for craftsmanship and are an analogue touch.
Costing more than $2 million, it is a 911 taken to the stratosphere but the demand for restomod cars sure says that this is what many wealthy collectors fancy these days.
Veloce 12
The 550 Maranello has been a great within the illustrious Ferrari line-up and was bursting with its traditional GT ethos of having a V12 engine upfront and a gentlemanly demeanour. Now, Touring Superleggera has doled out a restomod of a 550 Maranello replete with a V12 upfront. That said, a lot has been tweaked with the engine being rebuilt for more power and the suspension being changed of course to be a modern day long-distance express.
The styling though has carefully retained the essence of the original 550 but has merely played along with the design details. The interior too is decked up in classic luxury with leather all around and a delicious open-gated manual gearbox for us to savour and of course, drive. The price is a hefty one along with a donor 550 but it is an interesting concoction nevertheless.
Tuthill GT One
A street-legal LeMans racer sure beats your garden variety hypercar and the Tuthill One is simply gorgeous and pays a tribute to the Porsche 911 GT1 racing car. It looks stunning with its streamlined proportions and yet is modern with aerodynamic inspired details but the shape is beautiful along with clinging to its racing attributes.
The look is plucked from a LeMans racer but is road legal and is dotted with impressive detailing. You can spec a naturally aspirated screaming flat-six or a more powerful Turbo motor as well while a manual gearbox will appeal to enthusiasts. Only a handful of these creations would be made and in essence they replicate what the iconic 911 GT1 did many years back.
Somnath Chatterjee grew up around cars and most of his childhood was spent obsessing over supercars. Years later he decided to start writing about them and hasn’t looked back since. While he has had his fair share of cars, the world of automobiles never ceases to amaze him. Travelling all over the world to drive them along with sharing that experience is what ultimately keeps him going. He hopes to drive a Ferrari 288 GTO someday because, well, do you really need a reason?
