THREE HEALTH ISSUES THAT MEN NEED TO WATCH OUT FOR AS THEY GET OLDER

by | Feb 18, 2022 | Health/Wellness

It is a sad fact that as we get older, we all start to notice our bodies changing. It gets tougher to shed those excess pounds. Those wrinkles and those bags under our eyes start to get a little more pronounced. Hair loss is no longer just a strand or two clinging to our hairbrush. Men’s health becomes more of a focus.

Those regular check-ups at the doctor need to happen more frequently and their advice starts to become a little more pointed. These issues happen to the best of us, but there are several ways that you can look after yourself. Here are just a few of the issues that you should be looking out for.

Men’s health: Heart disease

Heart disease is the biggest killer out there and we all need to be making sure that we are taking the necessary steps to cut down on the risk. There are several lifestyle factors that everyone needs to know about. If you eat a lot of high fat foods, sodium, and sugar, then you are putting your heart under a lot of strain. Drinking in excess is also a factor, and you need to make sure that you are getting enough exercise. You should also quit smoking if you are a smoker. Many of the contributing factors to heart disease also play a role in diabetes, which we also need to all be keeping tabs on.

Joint and muscle pain

Everyone has that moment when they realise it takes more effort than before to stand up from a squat, or to lift a heavy box. We all need to take greater care of our joints and muscles as we get older. Everyone knows that you are supposed to lift with your legs, but if you are suffering from persistent aches and pains in your joints then visit a physiotherapist.

They will be able to recommend exercises that you can do at home. And with so many of us still working from home, we have all faced more muscle pain in our shoulders and lower back. Make sure that you are stretching regularly and you adjust your computer monitor to avoid craning your neck. There are also many natural plant-based stimulants you can look at, considered safe, that will boost your physical and mental energy.

Hair loss

As we age, the chances of our losing our hair get less favourable to our scalps. There are a number of different contributing factors to hair loss, but one of the most common is genetic. If you have relatives on either side of your family tree, then you may be at risk of male pattern baldness. Losing your hair is an extremely common issue, and there are steps that you can take to either slow down the loss or to address the problem.

You can look at adding more iron, vitamin D and zinc to your diet, you can avoid hair treatments that include heat or chemicals, or you could look at prescription drugs such as Finasteride and Propecia. You could also think about a FUE hair transplant. This process takes individual hair follicles from the sides and back of your head and transplants them to the sites where you have hair loss.
