The G-Class is a legend within the vast Mercedes-Benz range and one that has stood the test of time with a fan following which would be the envy of most car-makers. However, the G-Class that everyone wants is the G63 with a massive V8 but to transition it to greener pastures means the tricky matter of embedding this rugged SUV within an electrified ethos. The German car maker has done just that with the Mercedes EQG electric G-Class doing what the G-Wagon does best but silently.
The birth of this SUV though is also quite interesting. Arnold Schwarzenegger implored the then Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz AG, Dieter Zetsche to electrify the G-Class. Schwarzenegger, who’s been a long supporter of electric vehicles, always dreamed of it. The Mercedes vehicle is being built in Schwarzenegger’s alpine hometown of Graz, Austria.
Mercedes EQG: A rugged beast
The result is the EQG and despite being electric, at heart it is a rugged beast and one that is packed to the brim with technology. The EQG comes with four electric motors at each wheel no less.
Thus, the SUV can do tank turns or a synchronized 360-degree turn with adding reverse and forward power at each wheel at the same time. While this is no doubt a stunt that will get people talking, its application is for tighter off-road trails. The EQG retains its body-on-frame platform and that is crucial for the off-road DNA which has been preserved.
Hence, the off-road capability would be on par with the gasoline model and that is certainly something which would appeal to owners. Other details include four motors plus a two-speed gearbox while both range and power would be ample.
The Mercedes EQG will launch in mid to late 2024
The ground clearance plus wading capability is also expected to be as good as a petrol or diesel model while we think it would not have the same towing ability as that will affect the range. The Mercedes electric G-Wagon will retain its classic charm with some minor touches being applied to distinguish it from the gasoline models. The grille would be blanked off along with different wheels too. Perhaps, the biggest change would be the box at the rear to store the charging cables in place of the spare wheel being mounted.
The all-electric G-Class is coming this year and Mercedes-Benz is putting the final touches to the biggest change in the off-roaders history. While this is indeed controversial, the EQG goes down the right path at least in being different when it comes to other electric SUVs.
The Mercedes EQG is expected to be priced at $150,000.
