When talking casino movies, a new study reveals that James Bond’s Casino Royale, starring Daniel Craig, ranks as the most popular.
The study by iGaming experts at new online casinos site Kongebonus analyzed data from IMDb, Metacritic, Rotten Tomatoes and BoxOfficeMojo on over 150 casino-themed movies. Each rating was converted into a weighted index with a maximum score of 100 to discover the most popular.
Casino Royale
Casino Royale, the first installment of Daniel Craig’s James Bond, ranks first with an overall score of 92.51 out of 100. This results from an IMDb rating of 8, Metascore rating of 80, Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 90, and Tomatometer score of 94, the highest on the list.
The movie came out in 2006 and earned $606 million worldwide – $948 million in 2024 when accounting for inflation. In the film, Bond must prevent a terrorism financier from winning a high-stakes poker game. Apart from Craig, the movie stars Eva Green, Mads Mikkelsen, Jeffrey Wright and Judi Dench.
Hangover
The Hangover comes in second, with a score of 87.49. The movie received an IMDb rating of 7.70, a Metascore of 73, a Tomatometer score of 79 and an audience score of 84.
The Hangover was released in 2009 and stars Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, and Justin Bartha as four friends who have a wild night in Las Vegas for Doug’s (Bartha’s character) bachelor party, only to wake up the following day with no memory of what happened. It earned $469 million, which equates to approximately $690 million in today’s currency.
Rain Man
Rain Man ranks third with an overall score of 86.57 out of 100 – an IMDb rating of 8.00, a Metascore of 65, a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 90, and a Tomatometer score of 88. The film, released in 1988, grossed $354 million worldwide, equivalent to approximately $944 million in 2024 with inflation.
The story follows Charlie Babbitt, played by Tom Cruise, who discovers his estranged brother Raymond, portrayed by Dustin Hoffman, is an autistic savant after their father’s death. Hoffman’s performance won him an Academy Award for Best Actor.
Ocean’s Eleven
Further down the list, 2001’s Ocean’s Eleven is in fourth place with an overall score of 85.61 out of 100. The film features an IMDb rating of 7.70, a Metascore of 74, a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 80, and a Tomatometer score of 83. The star-studded cast includes George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Julia Roberts.
The plot centers around Danny Ocean and his eleven accomplices planning to rob three Las Vegas casinos simultaneously. The movie earned $450 million, equivalent to $802 million in today’s money.
Casino
Casino rounds out the top five with an overall score of 82.85 out of 100. The film’s ratings include an IMDb score of 8.20, a Metascore of 73, a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 93, and a Tomatometer score of 79. Released in 1995, Casino grossed $116 million, approximately $239 million in 2024 money, accounting for inflation. Directed by Martin Scorsese, the movie stars Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, and Joe Pesci. It delves into the complex world of Las Vegas casinos and organized crime, highlighting the rise and fall of casino executive Sam ‘Ace’ Rothstein.
The Sting, Ocean’s Thirteen, Ocean’s Twelve, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and Now You See Me come in positions six-to-ten, with scores ranging from 82.64 to 70.81.
