WATCH WIND-UP: NEWS RELEASES FROM BREITLING AND NOMOS GLASHUTTE

by | Feb 24, 2022 | Style, Watches

There are higher priorities in the news today, we know, with tanks storming across Ukraine. In Canada, we just stepped out of an Emergencies Act. We’ll endeavour to take our minds off all of this, as much as we can. News in the world of men’s luxury watches today is led by news releases from Breitling, teaming up with Triumph motorcycles, and a stylistic offering from Nomos Glashütte.

First out of the gate is a tip-of-the-hat to the sub-culture of “cafe racers”, stylish motorcycles from decades past. Close your eyes and picture a speed-driven summer day, around the mid-1960s. Think of a movie or TV show you saw. Maybe an ad in an old men’s magazine (remember print?). Breitling has teamed up with British motorcycle brand Triumph with the launch of Breitling Top Time.

Men’s luxury watches: Something for “young and active professionals”

“Triumph’s heritage and modern-retro aesthetic are just two of the many things we have in common,” said Georges Kern, CEO of Breitling, in a statement. “Their blending of tradition with technology is completely in sync with what we do.”

Both luxury brands are dual-timing product launches. The motorcycle guys are launching 270 co-branded motorcycles – the Speed Twin Breitling Limited Edition. Breitling is producing a Top Time Triumph watch with a distinctive brushed finish in the bow-tie motif. Those who purchase one of the bikes will have the opportunity to also purchase a special owner’s version of the Top Time Triumph. That one has a sunray dial and engraved caseback.

The ice-blue dials are the stars of both watches. This unique color has two major references: a blue Triumph Thunderbird 6T from 1951, and a rare, blue-dialed Breitling Top Time Ref. 815 from the 1970s.

At 41mm diameter, the watches are powered by the Breitling Caliber 23, a COSC-certified chronometer with a power reserve of approximately 48 hours.

More cool, more style from Nomos Glashütte

Nomos Glashütte releases their Tangente platinum gray – graceful Arabic numerals, a slender bezel, a coin-shaped steel case, a flat cylinder with straight sides, topped by smooth sapphire crystal glass. Very cool, and elegant. Nomos Glashütte ended 2021 with gold and silver releases. Now the platinum one.

The dial is plated with rhodium, a platinum metal which provides the striking gray hue. Rhodium-plated, needle-thin hands accentuate the harmonious design and are visible at a glance. Tangente neomatik platinum gray is available in 35 and 39 millimetres. The in-house automatic caliber DUW 3001 is not merely precise, it is also very slender. With stainless steel back (or a sapphire crystal glass back), the 35 mm goes for $4110, and the 39 is priced at $4400.
