According to the New York Snow Report these days, snow pack levels across the state are 226% above normal. That means five-star skiing, with snow depth anywhere from six inches to four feet. With Christmas season nigh, the best places to feel nostalgic is where there’s snow.
Christmas encourages joy, social connection, relaxation. Seeing the tapestry of holiday lights once again draping homes and trees, the smell of pine needles and holiday baking, wood-burning fireplace, Christmas carolling, Jimmy Stewart’s It’s A Wonderful Life back on our televisions – all evoke feelings of warmth, and comfort, remembrances of youth and innocence, a welcome balm during this divisive era. When it comes to snow, though, some of us have to drive to where it is.
Chautauqua County is the westernmost county in New York State, charming, idyllic, right on the shores of Lake Erie. Hence the lake snow effect. That’s where the snow is, 70 miles southwest of Buffalo, 172 miles from Toronto, if you’re looking for something truly Christmas-y over the next month.
Winter sports
Many parks and trails, like those at Long Point State Park and Chautauqua Institution, provide groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The county is home to Peek’n Peak Resort, which offers downhill skiing, snowboarding, and terrain parks. It’s a family-friendly destination with options for all skill levels.
Check out the weather reports though – the New York Snow Report currently says Peek’n Peak Resort has 24-48 inches of snow depth. The resort is one of the most popular ski destinations, with 26 trails and runs, spread out over 130 acres of ski-able terrain, as well as season lift passes, equipment rentals, and lessons.
Base elevation is 1,400 feet, and the longest run is 4,100 feet. Glide through glades and hidden trials. Then back down to the Tudor-style Inn for a meal or glass of wine. The Inn features King Rooms or Double Queens, and Balcony Suites, which have gas fireplaces, as well as the more spacious Parlor Suites, also with gas fireplaces. Over 85 mountainside condos are also available for rental. Roasting s’mores around the outdoor fire pits is a popular activity.
Chautauqua County boasts over 400 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, making it a popular destination for snowmobiling enthusiasts.
Charming towns and cultural activities
While the Institution is best known for its summer programs, Chautauqua Institution transforms into a picturesque winter wonderland where visitors can enjoy serene walks, cultural exhibits, and holiday events.
Towns like Westfield, with its vineyards, gorges and historical buildings, and Mayville, with a population of 1,750, offer boutique shopping, cozy restaurants, and historic charm. There’s plenty of history here – settlers began arriving in the 1790s. Currently there are 24 active historical organizations and museums in the county that work to preserve historically significant architecture and artifacts.
Wine and Craft Beverage Scene
Chautauqua County is part of the Lake Erie Wine Country, home to more than 20 wineries. Many are open year-round, offering warm tasting rooms where you can enjoy local wines. Breweries and distilleries, like Southern Tier Brewing Company, offer craft beers and spirits, perfect for warming up after outdoor adventures.
Scenic beauty
The county’s rolling hills, forests, and snow-covered landscapes provide stunning views and photo opportunities. A quiet winter hike or a drive through the countryside can be peaceful, especially if you can put away the mobile device for an afternoon.

Overall, with its two cities, Jamestown and Dunkirk, its 27 towns and 15 villages, its historical heritage and local culture, its six lakes and 50 miles of Lake Erie shoreline – and now the snow fall – Chautauqua County is an ideal – and convenient – getaway for a Christmas-time respite.

I am a 50-something Torontonian who loves everything about my city. It’s been my home, my playground, for my entire life. I went to school here. I met my wife here. I own real estate here. I love writing about the transformation of my city on the world stage, which hasn’t been anything short of dramatic. That continues on, as I write this. I write on the real estate scene. I write on travel and fashion. I like following the world of luxury watches.
But I love writing about cars – check that, luxury cars, a level of superior, engineering sophistication, high performance and style, that transports you not just from one destination to another but also out of whatever you are going through on a particular day, whatever mood you are in, all to another head space. It’s complete and total exhilaration, head to toe.
