MASERATI MC20 CIELO SPYDER IS A GLAMOROUS DROP-TOP FIT FOR CANNES

A resort town nestled within the French Riviera happens to be one of the most talked about places in the whole world for a few days every year. We are talking about Cannes. The best form of transport should ideally be a fast drop-top with sleek Italian lines.

Something like the new Maserati MC20 Cielo Spyder perhaps? The Italian luxury brand has risen from the ashes to produce its own bespoke sports car and its own engine. The line-up isn’t complete without a glamorous spyder variant. After all roofless supercars are much sought after. It isn’t the speed but about looking good in it that matters and places like Miami or the South of France thrive of this genre of cars.

Maserati MC20 Cielo Spyder: Glass top means the best of both worlds

What’s more, the new retractable glass roof will stow away in just 12 seconds and even turn opaque to steer clear of the paparazzi. Unlike some convertibles which either get a soft-top or a cloth-based roof, the Maserati MC20 Cielo Spyder gets a glass roof. That gives a feeling of being one with the sky even with the roof up. Also perfect for places where the weather isn’t always drop-top friendly, like London.

Convertible versions weigh more than their fixed roof siblings. That’s due to the complex adjustments that have to be done in order to compensate for the lack of a roof. The Maserati Cielo though is only 65 kg heavier. Its clientele will hardly notice the difference. Nope, it’s all about embracing those rather sensuous proportions and soaking in the weather along with the attention bestowed at you.

Maserati MC20 Cielo Spyder: A ballsy 630 horsepower

The Spyder is also more gorgeous than the coupe as the flowing silhouette is even more striking with the lack of a roof. The rear window is also replaced and the rear in-takes have been tweaked also. We would also say that the new Acquamarina colour fits in with the summer vibe rather well. It is also available as a part of the Maserati Fuoriserie customisation programme.

The other highlight is that those attention-grabbing butterfly doors have been retained for the Cielo. That’s further good news for the extrovert drop-top supercar buyer. Performance is similar to the coupe with the same 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder twin-turbo ‘Nettuno’ engine which develops a healthy 630 hp and 730Nm. As expected, the car offers five drive modes: WET, GT, SPORT, CORSA and ESC OFF.

For Maserati, interior no longer starved of tech

The interior meanwhile considerably turns down the drama, surprisingly sober, but it is drowned in carbon fibre and has an Alcantara steering wheel. Compared to Maserati’s of yore, you are no longer starved of tech as there is a 10.25-inch digital cluster and a 10.25-inch HD screen. A 12-speaker Sonus faber High Premium audio system features amongst the list of luxuries too.

Deliveries will start from next year (expected price is $277,000). While the MC20 Cielo enters a crowded arena, the supermodel good looks and the form factor of the glass roof has its own appeal. It could be the new drop-top to be seen in and for Maserati’s sake, let’s hope for that.
