Father’s Day is tomorrow. If you are still searching for gift ideas, how about making it easier for yourself and narrowing your purchase down to a whisky? And looking at whisky, most often that solution is The Macallan Scotch Whisky.

After all, it has set records for the most expensive whiskies sold at auction. Also highly sought after are its limited editions and its older and rarer whiskies.

The Canadian retail market has not seen many of The Macallan Sherry whiskies made available recently. The only exception was the 25 year old (LCBO $2,600).

Macallan makes its return

However there is good news, according to Nicholas Villalon, Edrington Area Manager for Eastern Canada. Villalon reports the return of this iconic single malt to Canada – The Macallan Sherry Oak 12 Years Old. As he says, this brand of whisky is beloved by aficionados all over the world. That’s because of its “rich mouthfeel and complex flavours of spices and dried fruits.”

With the scarcity of Exceptional Oak Casks used in its production, it has only been available in rare supply in recent years.

“We are incredibly grateful to offer it once again, albeit in limited quantities, to the Canadian connoisseurs,” says Villalon.

When you open the bottle, in my case a sample bottle, you immediately smell the sweetness and the richness of dried fruit in this Macallan whisky.

Nosing it in a glass, it opens up a bit as you let it breathe and you get vanilla, spice, and the dried fruits, a nice balance. In terms of the taste, there is a bit of spice, oak and dried fruit from the sherry finished casks used for aging. But it does have a youthful characteristic to it, with a nice finish.

The Macallan Sherry Oak 12 Years Old will be available in 750mL bottles (43% ABV) at a suggested retail price of $149.95. Prices will vary by market and are subject to applicable taxes. Availability will be limited.

Maybe you wish to share the Macallan whisky with friends who prefer cocktails over drinking it straight. If so you can mix them up a Sherry Copa where The Sherry Oak 12 Years Old is accentuated by the addition of Oloroso and the effervescent tonic.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz. The Macallan Sherry Oak 12 Years Old
  • .75 oz. Oloroso sherry
  • Tonic water

Build in glass, add ice, and stir. Garnish with a lemon wheel and enjoy responsibly.

Hope you’re able to get your bottle of this version of The Macallan, either for yourself or for Dad this Father’s Day. Enjoy!
